Ethymology[muokkaa]

Is it a well-grounded fact that biisi comes from "piece", or is it just guesswork based on the normal p/b exchange? I would have thought it was from Proto-Germanic *wīsǭ or later exchange with Old Swedish vīsa, Old Norse vísa (“strophe, stanza”), Swedish visa (song). It is a hypercorrection of English piece. Since old Finnish words do not use the [b] sound but Finnish speakers know that foreign languages do, the people who first used this word, either consciously or unconsciously, thought that since piece is a foreign word, it "must" start with a b as it's more fine to use b instead of p. Thus they put a b into a place where it wouldn't actually belong - and thus biisi became a word. Mölli-Möllerö (keskustelu) 25. toukokuuta 2023 kello 08.22 (UTC)[vastaa]
